- GUARDIANS HAS THE BEST CHARACTER INTRO OF ANY MARVEL MOVIE there I said it. I don’t know about y’all, but I first went into this movie not really knowing what to expect. It starts off on a serious tone, with death, alien abduction, and scavenging on a dark planet whose civilization has eroded away. Then Chris Pratt unveils his brand new, lean, tanned hunk face and starts dancing to “Come and Get Your Love” as the opening title fills the screen and you realize you’re in for a great ride.
- Thanos finally says words! Like, three lines worth, but words! And the audience learns more about him through Gamora, Nebula and Ronan.
- I’ve read that the humor in Guardians hits closest to the mark of Marvel comics in general. They’re not the serious affairs of (the first and second) Thor or Captain America with a few quips thrown in, but constantly filled with silliness and ridiculousness. Don’t believe me? Look up Throg and Squirrel Girl.
- It’s funny, the music’s great, there’s some cool galactic backgrounds reminiscent of Thor, and it manages to stand apart from the rest of the MCU while still being integral to the overarching plot. Rad.
Dislikes:
- My eyes tend to glaze over when it gets to any of the gratuitous action scenes. One can only watch so many spaceships, lasers and shows of brute strength in a single movie. And considering this happens in almost every Marvel movie, it’s getting kind of old by now.
- How many times are we going to characterize our male leads as cool based on the forgettable females they sleep with in the opening scenes? Stahhp.
