Why You Should Watch It
It’s colorful, it’s quirky, it’s surreal, and yeah, it’s adorably Canadian to boot. Michael Cera is the perfect awkward protagonist, trying to navigate his ordinary early twenties while also caught up in the outrageous premise of fighting off former suitors Dragon-Ball-Z-style. The silly comic/video game effects such as action words, energy bars, and earning coins and lives are reminiscent of Adam West’s Batman, but the camp is even more entertaining when mixed in with epic action shots to create a comic book adaptation that truly stands apart from the rest.

The Spoilers
I was hesitant to include this film in Weird Movie Wednesday because it’s so straightforward and doesn’t require much explaining (however will I fill up the Spoilers section if there’s nothing to explain?!). But after some consideration, I believe Scott Pilgrim does qualify as weird for its unique style and sense of humor. My only question is whether or not the suitors are actually dying when they explode into coins upon defeat. Do they regenerate or are they gone forever? Is Scott a murderer?
I guess in the type of universe where people are willing to make pacts to fight off future gentlemen (or lady) callers, death by coin explosion is just an occupational hazard.
